Barbara’s Story

< Back to the Generic Service Intervention: Dementia Competency Framework

Barbara’s Story is a training programme launched by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to raise awareness of how it feels to be a patient with dementia and is suitable for all staff. It can be used in different ways to cover both foundation (1st section of film) and intermediate levels (full film with accompanying training documents).

Barbara’s story is thought-provoking and challenging, providing a unique insight of someone living with dementia.

Staff can complete a reflective practice piece on the film they have watched, thinking about what impact the care that Barbara received had on her and what they can do to challenge/change this for patients like Barbara coming into their wards/departments.
